Con este post, inauguro una nueva sección del blog, Sound and Vision (Sonido y Visión). En esta sección, compartiré algunos de mis momentos favoritos en cine y televisión, esos momentos en donde la música ayuda a expresar algo más allá de las palabras, un estado del alma, y que nos hace asociar por siempre la canción que escuchamos con la escena que vemos. Creo que no podría expresarlo mejor que Tarantino, uno de los cineastas más talentosos, en especial en cuanto a la elección de la música para sus películas. En su opinión: "una de las cosas acerca de la música en las películas que es como taaan cool, es el hecho de que cuando lo haces bien, cuando usas la canción correcta en la escena correcta [...] se trata de la cosa más cinemática que puedes hacer, en verdad estás haciendo algo que las películas hacen mejor que cualquier otra forma de arte. Realmente funciona de esta manera cinemática tan visceral y emocional que es taaan especial, es simplemente muy muy especial. Y cuando lo haces bien, y le das en el blanco, entonces el efecto es que nunca puedes realmente oír esa canción de nuevo sin pensar de cierta manera en esa imagen de la película".
Y bueno, como en este momento tengo una obsesión bastante malsana con la serie Girls, decidí empezar comentando la escena final del episodio 3, temporada 1, "Todas las chicas aventureras lo hacen".
Hannah está tocando fondo. Acaba de ser diagnosticada con VPH aun cuando sólo ha tenido dos parejas sexuales en su vida, y a pesar de usar siempre condones pues, como nos ha dicho con anterioridad, sufre de una fobia al VIH relacionada con Forrest Gump. Más tarde, decide ir a enfrentar a su ex, sólo para enterarse de que ha salido del clóset. Llega a casa completamente herida en su ego, y quiere expresar lo que siente a través de su cuenta de twitter. Primero escribe: "Mi vida ha sido una completa mentira, my ex novio sale con un chico". Pero pronto se da cuenta de que esto es demasiado revelador. Y entonces, algo en su humor cambia. Recuerda la discusión que ha tenido antes con Shosh, una de la chicas de Girls, en la que le dice que Jessa también ha sido diagnosticada con el virus, y su única reacción ha sido "le sucede a todas las chicas aventureras". De repente, la música cambia y empieza a sonar "Dancing on my own" de Robyn. Hannah twittea "Todas las chicas aventureras lo hacen" y comienza a bailar sola, recordando que aun cuando la vida es dura, sigue estando joven y viva. Marnie regresa a casa de una fiesta y encuentra a Hannah bailando, lo que la hace sonreír. Las dos comienzan a bailar, y, sin decir nada, nos transmiten ese espíritu de amistad que es mi opinión,todo lo que Girls encarna o debería encarnar.

With this post, I'm inaugurating a new section of the blog, Sound and Vision. In this section, I will share some of my favorite moments in cinema and television, those moments where music helps express something beyond words, a state of the soul, and makes us associate forever the song that we're hearing with the scene that we're watching. I guess I couldn't say it better than Tarantino, one of the most talented cinematographers, especially when it comes to the choice of his movie soundtracks. In his opinion:
“one of the things about using music in movies that is like soo cool, it’s the fact that if you do it right, if you use the right song, in the right scene [...] it’s about as cinematic a thing as you can do, you really do what movies do better than any other art form. It really works in this visceral, emotional, cinematic way that’s just like special, it’s just really really special. And when you do it right, and you hit it right, then the effect is you can never really hear that song again without kind of thinking about that image from the movies.”
So, since right now I have a quite unhealthy obsession with the TV show Girls', I decided to start by commenting the final scene of Season 1, Episode 3 "All adventurous women do".
Hannah is hitting bottom. She's just being diagnosed with HPV virus even if she's only had two sexual partners in her life, and even though she has been using condoms regularly since, as she has told us previously, suffers from a Forrest Gump-related HIV phobia. Later on, she decides to go face her latest ex, just to learn that he's gotten out of the closet. She arrives home completely ego-wounded, and she wants to express the way she's feeling through her twitter account. First she writes "My life has been a complete lie, my ex dates a guy". But she soon realizes that's way too revealing. And then, something in her mood changes. She remembers her discussion early on with one of the Girls' girls, Shosh, telling her Jessa's been diagnosed HPV as well, and she's reacted only by telling "All adventurous women do". Suddenly, the playlist changes and Dancing on my own by Robyn starts playing. Hannah tweets "All adventurous women do" and starts dancing on her own, remembering that even if life's tough, she's still young and alive. Marnie comes home from a party just to walk into Hannah dancing, which makes her giggle. They both start dancing, and without saying anything, you feel all the spirit of friendship that is to my opinion, what Girls is, or should be, all about.
