If you still haven't seen them: the films of 2011 Part I

Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris"
with: Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates.

I loved everything about this movie. Ok, I must confess I felt very connected to the main character and his infatuation with Paris and parisian lifestyle. Having been myself a parisian for over 6 years, I can understand the magic of the city that Allen tried to transmit, not without a good deal of irony...and as a hopeless romantic I also related to his quest for the "golden age", which is never the one we live in. I also appreciated the slight caricature of Paris in the late 20's, very much inspired from Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast", it got me literally laughing on the floor. And, as an irrefutable proof of the magic of Paris, as I walked my way out of the movie theater, I just literally ran into Louis Garrel, the ultimate parisian heartthrob...and that is the kind of magic Paris transmits, throughout the history of its streets, you always wonder if someday you'll be a part of it, and you sure are. // Amé absolutamente todo de esta película. Debo confesar que me sentí muy identificada con su personaje principal y su encaprichamiento con París y el estilo de vida parisino. Siendo parisina durante más de 6 años, puedo entender la magia de la ciudad que Allen intenta transmitir, no sin una buena dosis de ironía...y en tanto que romántica sin remedio, también me relacioné con su búsqueda de la "edad de oro", que siempre resulta ser otra que aquélla en que vivimos. También disfruté su ligera caricatura del París de finales de los 20, enteramente inspirada del "París es una fiesta" de Hemingway, me tuvo literalmente muerta de risa. Y, como prueba irrefutable de la magia de París, mientras me conducía a la salida de la sala de cine, me topé con Louis Garrel, el máximo galán parisino...y ése es el tipo de magia que París transmite, a través de la magia de sus calles, siempre nos preguntamos si un día seremos parte de ésta, y sin duda lo somos. 

Terrence Malick's "Tree of Life"

with: Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Sean Penn.

Visually captivating, I must confess I didn't enjoy "The Tree of Life" as much as I expected to. It might have been the fact that I had just gotten out of hours of reading at the library when I went to see it, but I found it really slow-paced and about 20 minutes too long. It began well, and there are scenes that must count as one of the most beautifully filmed ones ever; some dialogues are great too, but at the end it just got too metaphorical for me, and I guess I just couldn't believe what I saw... I still chose it as one of the films of 2011 because of the amazing cinematography by Emmanuel Lubezki, and the really great performances of Brad Pitt and Jessica Chastain.  // Visualmente cautivadora, debo confesar que no disfruté "The Tree of Life" tanto como pensaba. Puede haber sido el hecho de haber ido al cine después de horas de lectura en la biblioteca, pero me pareció realmente lenta y demasiado larga. Empezó muy bien, y algunas escenas deben de estar entre las más bellamente filmadas de todos los tiempos; algunos diálogos son geniales también, pero al final se puso demasiado metáforica para mí, y creo que simplemente no me creía lo que veía... A pesar de esto la elegí como una de las películas del año por la increíble fotografía de Lubezki, y las actuaciones de Brad Pitt y Jessica Chastain. 

Mike Mills' "Beginners"

With: Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer, Mélanie Laurent.

I went to the movie theater not expecting much from this romantic comedy, but I was positively surprised. The ensemble is quite irregular, and I guess I preferred some parts of it to others, but as a whole I got pretty touched and interested by all the characters and their lives. But, what made the movie more than just another romantic comedy to me, was the outstanding performance of Christopher Plummer as Ewan McGregor's dad, a mature man deciding to life his last years to the top, from revealing his true sexual orientation to dealing with terminal cancer with an extraordinary optimism. On the other hand, there's Oliver, McGregor's character, afraid of living the life that's ahead of him. And Laurent's character comes as the chance he's been waiting to start enjoying himself and start living...Definitely worth watching. // Fui al cine sin muchas expectativas de esta comedia romántica, pero fui positivamente sorprendida. Si bien el conjunto es un poco irregular, y hubo partes que me gustaron mucho más que otras, en general me interesé y conmoví con las vidas de todos los personajes. Pero, en mi opinión, lo que hizo de esta peli algo más que una simple comedia romántica, fue la impresionante actuación de Christopher Plummer como el padre de McGregor, un hombre maduro que decide vivir su vida al máximo, desde revelar su verdadera orientación sexual hasta lidiar con un cáncer terminal con un optimismo extraordinario. Por otro lado está Oliver, el personaje de McGregor, temeroso de vivir la vida que está enfrente de él. Y el personaje de Laurent aparece como la oportunidad que estaba esperando para empezar a divertirse y disfrutar de la vida...Definitivamente vale la pena verla! 

Paul Feig's "Bridesmaids"

with: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Chris O'Dowd and Jon Hamm

This is a movie that got me literally laughing on the floor. There was one scene that was a bit too much for me (you'll know when you see it), but all in all I really enjoyed the performances by all the actors and actresses, especially Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne fighting to be the "best friend" of the bride, Maya Rudolph. Also fun to watch Jon Hamm (Mad Men's Don Draper) as the ultimate douchebag, and proving his comedian skills. I won't tell you more not to spoil it to you... // Esta es una peli que me tuvo literalmente muerta de risa. Hay sólo una escena que estuvo de más en mi opinión (Ya sabrán cual cuando la vean), pero dentro de todo disfruté mucho las actuaciones de todos los actores, especialmente las de Kristen Wiig y Rose Byrne peleando por el título de "mejor amiga" de la novia, Maya Rudolph. También fue divertido ver a Jon Hamm (el Don Draper de Mad Men) en el rol del supremo patán, y haciendo gala de sus dotes como comediante. No les diré más para no arruinarles el show...

Lone Scherfig's "One Day"

with: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson

Careful, guys, this isn't the regular chick-flick you go to watch in a first date! This is actually a quite depressing movie, that deals with much profound matters than finding love and sticking to it. It's a film about friendship, existential issues such as finding your path and struggling to succeed, and mostly about becoming (or not) the person you want to be, morally, esthetically and professionally. All seen through the eyes of our two characters, Emma and Dexter. And there's also a story between them, and the story of how they influence one another, but you should also read the novel to get to appreciate the characters better. Not my favorite, but was definitely worth the price ticket. // Cuidado chicos, esta no es la clásica chick-flick para ver en una primera cita! Es en realidad una peli bastante deprimente, que trata de temas mucho más profundos que encontrar el amor y hacerlo durar. Es una peli sobre amistad, problemas existenciales como encontrar tu vocación y luchar para triunfar, y sobre todo una peli que trata sobre convertirte (o no) en la persona que quieres ser, moral, estética y profesionalmente. Todo visto a través de los ojos de nuestros dos personajes, Emma y Dexter. Y también está la historia entre ellos, y la historia de cómo se influencian mutuamente, pero deberían leer la novela para apreciar mejor a los personajes. No mi favorita, pero definitivamente valió el precio del boleto.
